Canyon de Chelly - continued

Apparently you can do 4x4 trips with the Navajo into the Canyon - i did not have time, but if you look on the canyon floor you can see the cars In the shadow to the bottom right of the previous picture are some more ruins.....

This is Spider Rock - according to Navajo legend the Spider Woman lives on the tip of the taller spire.

Day 3 continued - Canyon de Chelly - North Rim

Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "de Shay" apparently) is in the north east corner of Arizona. It has been inhabited for thousands of years, and there are ancestral pueblan dwellings that are around 1000 years old built into ledges and overhangs along the canyon - the Navajo still farm the bottom of the canyon.

This rock is called Navajo Fortress - apparently some Navajo survived a 3 month siege during the Indian Wars with US troops on the top of it!

Day 3 Part 1: Flagstaff to Monument Valley

There is a lot of cool rock formations in the painted desert of arizona And a lot of Arizona - these sort of photes are becoming a bit of a theme so far....

Entering Monument Valley, on the Utah/Arizona border, this is the first rock formation you see - but the rest are even more impressive

Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu city is on the border of Arizona and California - it was only founded in 1964, so to give themselves a "selling point" they bought the old London Bridge and installed it over a channel in the Lake. The result is a frankly tacky tourist trap surrounded by typical strip malls.

Yes - they really do have London dragons.... and of course London Bridge itself (note the palm tree in the background)
